About me
It took time to build my focus group, but today it gives me invaluable insights. I exchange ideas with Thais from all walks of life, farmers, construction workers, office staff, shopkeepers, bankers, and business owners. Even members of the hi‑so elite, military, and police contribute their perspectives. Often, one‑on‑one conversations are best, since many Thais hesitate to speak openly in front of others.
To truly understand Thailand, I believe listening and observing matter more than talking. God gave us two eyes and two ears, but only one mouth, a reminder I take seriously.
Through fieldwork and everyday conversations, I share an honest picture of Thailand, warts and all. I’ve written 20 books on Thais and Thailand, available in both eBook and print.
Although my style differs, my work echoes insights from Mai Pen Rai Means Never Mind, in my view, still the best introduction to Thai culture. Carol Hollinger’s 1965 classic remains strikingly relevant. Sadly, she passed away at just 45, before seeing her bestseller in print. I also lost the chance to collaborate with her on a book about the concept of “Face” in Thailand.
